We're the Pope family, the people behind Sum Dude's Spices & Rubs in York, South Carolina.
Our blends bring together Chef Jason's culinary experience and the people, places, and traditions that have shaped our family. Rooted in our Christian faith and a love for hospitality, we create seasonings to help you cook with confidence and share memorable meals.

Years before Sum Dude's became a business, Jason created Bucky's Original for the time he and his dad, Jimmy Pope (aka Bucky), spent together around the smoker. It remains Jason's oldest and most sentimental recipe.
In 2017, we shared Bucky's Original with family and friends as favors at our wedding. Guests loved it and began asking where they could get more. Those requests planted one of the earliest seeds for what would eventually become Sum Dude's Spices & Rubs.
Today, Bucky's Original proudly carries Dad's nickname - and the memories of time spent together around the smoker.
We name many of our blends for the people, places, and stories that shaped our family - so those memories can keep finding their way to the the table.
For us, a family name on a shaker is more than a tribute. It's a way of carrying a story forward. When one of those blends becomes part of another family's meal, the story gets to continue.

Jason Pope, Certified Executive Chef, is the owner and blend designer behind Sum Dude's Spices & Rubs.
After serving in the U.S. Navy, Jason pursued a culinary career spanning more than 30 years. He became a Certified Executive Chef in 2003, with experience across five-diamond resorts, country clubs, corporate dining, and famly-owned restaurants.
Today, he brings experience to every Sum Dude's blend - developing, tasting, and refining each recipe with a clear purpose in mind.
At home, he's Lisa's husband and a proud girl dad. Family, faith, fellowship, and service remain at the heart of the life and business we're building.
Every Sum Dude's blend is created with purpose. Sometimes that means solving a flavor challenge. Sometimes it means honoring a family tradition or creating a seasoning for a favorite meal.
We craft our blends in small batches for flavor consistency, with practical guidance to help you put them to use.
From the seasoning inside the shaker to presentation of our gift collections, we care about the details. We want you to feel confident cooking with our blends and proud to share them.
